For carers

Centrelink provides financial support to those caring for someone with a disability.

Carers of children under 16 years who have Down syndrome are eligible for the Carer Allowance. This is not means tested and is paid fortnightly. Carers of people with Down syndrome aged 16 and over may also be eligible for this payment.

The Carer Payment is available to carers who are unable to support themselves through sustained employment as a result of caring for a person with disability who has high support needs. Unlike the Carer Allowance, the Carer Payment is means tested and not all carers will be eligible.
