Expectant Parents

Expectant Parents

We would like to take this opportunity to congratulate you on your pregnancy and wish you all the best for the coming weeks.

In receiving the news that your child has Down syndrome, it is to be expected that you will experience a wide array of emotions. It may be of some comfort for you to know that others have felt the same and you are not alone. Be kind to yourself through this time and talk about your feelings. It may be hard to see now but these feelings will pass with time. As a parent, you will undoubtedly have questions about how and why this has happened. One of the first things to understand is that parents do not cause Down syndrome. Nothing you or your partner did or did not do before or during your pregnancy caused this. It is a variance of nature – no one is to blame.

DSAQ provides Expectant Parent Information Kits compiled by parents and professionals that aim to provide you and your family with supportive, honest and up to date information that will answer some of the questions that you may have. For a hard copy of the kit please get in touch with the office using the contact details below. You can also find the documents contained in the kit in the Useful Downloads section below.

At any time, if you would like to speak to someone in person, we can arrange for a Parent Support Volunteer or our Member Support and Resource Officer to come and visit you. Alternatively, if you prefer, arrangements can also be made to talk on the phone or for someone to visit following the birth of your child. There is no time restraint on this service so if you don’t feel ready now but do in a few weeks or months then please contact the office and we will arrange this for you.

Most importantly, your baby will need your love and care just like any other baby. It may be difficult to realise, but your baby will be more like other babies than unlike. Take care of yourself through the remainder of your pregnancy, and take the first few months to get to know your baby and enjoy parenthood. When you feel ready, we are here to help and support you in any way we can.
