Being involved in regular recreational and leisure activities can have positive influences on a person with Down syndrome's health and emotional well-being, but they can also provide great opportunities to develop a rich social life and build connections with their community. Research may need to take place in order to initially source the various recreational options that are available, but they may also need to be fairly proactive to allow participation in such activities to continue on an ongoing basis. The best place to start would be to determine what the person's interests are, see what options are available, and then to maybe “trial” some of the activities to see whether it is something that they enjoy and want to carry on.
There are many options to pursue recreational interests within the community:

• Queensland Scouts
• Queensland Guides
• Local community centres and groups
• Disability specific organisations (e.g. Special Olympics, Lifestream)
